Zeke met the raven girl on a Wednesday. It was the third day of the semester, after the breakfast rush but before the lunch rush; the only other person in the cafe was the manager, taking a smoke break out back.
His impressions of her: rude, stand-offish, perplexing. And yes…
…pretty cute.
“Hi, how can I help you?” he said in his best customer service voice. He was nothing if not professional.
“I’m here to see Dax Crowley, is he working today?” asked the girl. Her voice was lovely- soft and lilting.
The manager, much like the devil, appeared as he was spoken of. “I’m Dax Crowley,” he said. “How can I help you?” With a subtle hand flap under the bench, he dismissed Zeke from behind the counter. No doubt he wanted a chance to talk to a pretty girl alone.
Unable to find something else to do, Zeke began wiping the tables outside. He had a nice pattern going: a neat little zig-zag which optimised his movements. He was starting to fall into rhythm when he was interrupted by a sudden commotion inside.
“You come into my shop and ask me these questions?” yelled Dax.
There was a murmur of reply from the girl, but Zeke didn’t catch it. He rushed inside to see his manager with his arms half-raised, standing far too close to her, face contorted in anger.
Sheer panic flooded through Zeke. It was instinct, or perhaps the numerous induction videos he had watched the previous week, that made him seek out the small, red emergency box on the wall. Without hesitation he flipped open the lid and activated the fire alarm.
The sprinklers sprang into action.
It took the manager a second to figure out what had happened, but when he did, his rage turned squarely over to Zeke. “You- you damn bastard!” he roared, advancing on him menacingly.
“The fire brigade is coming,” said Zeke. “Do you really want to start something now?”
For a moment it looked like Dax was grappling the urge to break something, but in the end he merely screamed, “You’re fired! Get out! Both of you get out! Come back and I’ll call the police on you!”
Well, he said more things than that, but Zeke tried not to listen too hard. Nor did he need telling twice. He booked it as fast as the now-wet floor would let him. Once outside, he realised the girl hadn’t followed suit. He was about to run back in when she emerged, looking completely unruffled at everything that had occurred.
“Wha- what was that about?” said Zeke. He could feel the adrenaline rushing in his ears.
“Why did you do that?” asked the girl.
“Huh?”
“I didn’t need your help.” She calmly began to wipe at the water on her face.
First Zeke stood silent in disbelief. Then came the annoyance. This girl had been in a dangerous situation with no apparent inclination of de escalating it. “Actually, you may not have wanted help, but it sure looked as though you needed it.”
“Hmm,” said the girl, which would have been a very inadequate reply, but at that moment, a raven landed on her shoulder.
“Wow,” said Zeke involuntarily. He was completely distracted from his earlier annoyance.
“What?”
“No, it’s just that… that’s a very well trained bird.”
She blinked at him in surprise. “Oh, yes,” she said, “my bird is very well trained.”
There was a brief, uncomfortable silence, broken by gentle pitter-patter as rain began to fall.
“Well I’d best be off,” said the girl. “If you need a new job…” She paused, thought for a second, then finished, “Nevermind.” She opened her umbrella and walked away, not even gracing him with a goodbye.
Zeke was left on the drizzling sidewalk, wondering what on earth had just happened. The girl had come through the door, and in the span of ten minutes he had become jobless. He realised he didn’t even know why Dax had been so angry in the first place; for all he knew he could have been fired over a misunderstanding about muffin prices.
He sighed and began to trudge home. The morning’s events left him suddenly weary, as he contemplated the fact that he had lost his job not even a week into the semester.

It was already cool by the time Elowen made it to the rooftop. The air was crisp as a chip in rich people town: a welcome change from all the drizzling. She couldn’t get comfortable though; It was a little too exposed, and too well lit by the ever changing lights of the city below.
The rest of the crew were already there. By the edge of the rooftop, Cap was preoccupied with the ropes as Alyssa watched him intently.
The only one who greeted her was Rowan. Her twin grinned as she approached and asked her jokingly, “What took you so long?”
“I was following the Emily case,” replied Elowen. “I ran into some problems. Also, I think I met a Sensitive.”
“Oh yeah? You sure they weren’t a vampire?”
“Yup.”
“Sleepwalker?”
“Uh huh.”
“Distant spellcaster cousin?”
“None of the above.”
“Hmm. We should keep an eye on them then.”
“Yup.” Lifting her voice over the wind, she said, “Hey Cap, Alyssa, did you hear that?”
“Nope, I was too busy stoking my own ego,” said Cap.
“We heard, he’s just being stupid,” said Alyssa.
“You know me far too well,” said Cap. “But first things first. We start in one minute. Y’all ready?”

Note: I noticed a few days after posting the prologue that in the process of uploading, 2~3 pictures got taken out towards the end. Deeply upsetting as I kinda spent a lot of time on those. To the people that include lots of screenshots in their wordpress blog- how do you all do it without tearing your hair out?? If you have any advice it would be greatly appreciated. (Also the missing screenshots are there now, so please check them out if you have time, thank you all for reading!)

Start doing what???! What is this cliffhanger!? 🤣🤣🤣 Also lol Elowen. hahaha! What a way to make an impression on Zeke. I wonder what she asked Dax? Maybe the questions sounded incriminating if she was looking into Lexi Lilly’s case. But she said Emily’s case. Is this someone else than the person in the prologue then?
I wonder if Zeke will involve himself further with the rest of the squad. Ooh adventure!
Love the baby blue and sweet colors and bokeh effects! ❤ Is this your own preset? It's so pretty!

I forgot to reply about screenshots sorry for double comment. It could be that the screenshot pictures are too big and the upload got interrupted. Png files are huge, so if possible converting to jpg/jpeg will reduce the size and upload time by a huge amount! Saves a lot of space too!
Also are you uploading pictures to wp directly or using an alternate image hosting site? Sometimes these sites can lag. So it may take some time to load in different countries/zones. Happened to me once.

All good, thanks for the reply!
I couldn’t figure out how to put pictures directly onto WordPress (damn this UI change!) so I’ve been putting everything onto a Google Doc file and copy+pasting the whole thing. Maybe some got left out in the move?? I have absolutely no idea 😂 Everything is a mystery!

Oh I see. Yup if you put your pictures in the doc file in png format, they get transferred onto WP in png format too. You could convert your pics to jpg first before putting them in the doc file. 🙂
In reshade settings, there is a ‘screenshot format’ option where you can change ‘png’ to ‘jpeg/jpg’ so your screenshots are jpg directly. 🙂

Yes, what are they doing?!?!? They’re up to no good, that’s what. Don’t worry, they’ll be at it first thing next chapter 😉
What did Elowen ask Dax, hmm, I like to think it was something like, “Don’t you think that much hairgel is dumb and outdated?” But if not… all will be revealed… soon… xD
The preset I’m using was once downloaded from tumblr, but I modified it so much it’s practically unrecognisable. I call it Red Flavour. Don’t ask me why it’s so blue 😂
Thanks for reading!

Oof, that escalated! I wonder what Elowen said to Dax. She didn’t look fazed by his reaction at all, which is in stark contrast with Zeke’s perception. I wonder what Dax would have dine had Zeke not triggered the sprinklers.
Why do I get a feeling that her raven is not a raven at all?
Aww man, too bad she changed her mind about the job halfway through – was she going to suggest that he joins them? I wonder if that’s linked to what she said later about meeting a “Sensitive.” Is that what rest of the squad are, I wonder? Like someone who is more attuned to picking up on things that normally go missed by others? Sheer speculation of course.
Oh, I have gone back to the last chapter and yes, those last few images definitely do make a difference to how the chapter reads, ha! I get why you’d be frustrated by that. I’ll echo what Mercury said about converting images to jpg if you aren’t already doing that, and keeping an eye on file sizes; both for the reasons she mentioned but also so that you don’t run out of your image storage too quickly!
Speaking of images, I love that lost shot of Cap and Alysa with the city lights behind them!

Haha, yup, Zeke freaking out all on his own lonesome. Pathetic people. All are below Elowen.
The raven? What do you mean? It’s just a normal raven… Nothing to see here…… 😉 (P.S. Hey how did I not know before how frikkin HUGE ravens are?? This whole time I thought they were the size of blackbirds!)
All in all… I guess this chapter made more questions than answers 😅 I can’t reveal everything so quickly! How will I maintain suspense?
Ah, screenshots… I should check if they still take up space if I copy them in from google docs, if not I guess I’ll have to… start new blogs or something? This is a problem I’ve never had before 😂
Glad you like them though! That last one is my fave too!
Thanks for reading 😊

Woops, looks like Zeke was a little hasty on pulling the hero card there. I agree with him, though. It’s better to intervene when he didn’t really need to, than stay out of things when he should have jumped in. Raven girl sure doesn’t seem grateful, though. 😅
I wonder what a “Sensitive” is. Also, start doing what? I need to know more! The pictures in this chapter were beautiful, too 😁

Lol yup the two seem to be at odds with each other. Shucks for Zeke, but at least he doesn’t have to work under a volatile manager? 😂
What is it indeed? And what on earth are they doing? All will be revealed… Next chapter! Or the one after that! I… have not planned far ahead! 😅 But no they’ll be doing what they’re doing first thing next chapter. So hopefully revealed soon!
Thanks so much for reading 😊

Well, damn, I was curious what the manager was yelling at the raven girl about. LOL. When I’m putting pictures in, I usually do one at a time so I can keep track of them. Also, I had a wierd thing one time with screenshots that one of my readers brought to my attention. The pictures weren’t showing up for some reason, and I ended up just going through and uploading new versions of the pictures then deleting the old ones. I haven’t found a better way when this happens, but luckily it’s only happened once to me.

Yeah the screenshot issue is a pain, it’s happened to another chapter after this one as well. Thankfully I caught that one pretty quickly. I guess I could upload all the pics to a server like imgur then insert them one by one, but that seems to tedious! Oh well, I ain’t paying for wordpress, I guess I’ll just have to deal.

LOL, normally, WordPress behaves quite sufficiently. I remember when I had that problem, I had specifically gone into “Preview” like, to see my work instead of just looking at it in the editor, and that was the only time it did that so perhaps “Preview” mode has something to do with it. *shrugs* LOL.

Okay, I will begin by saying I DO NOT trust Dax’s vibes and in my mind, he is a murderer and completely suspect. I reserve the right to immediately abandon this stance as soon as there is evidence to the contrary (which will probably be very soon).
I love Elowen, she is clearly such as a bada$$ even though people clearly underestimate her. Like Zeke, my dude, she does not need your help.
As someone who uses a ton of screenshots every chapter (why am I like this), I will say that I feel your pain. I definitely convert to jpegs and make the files smaller so they load and I also upload directly to WordPress in the post. Warning, this gets super unwieldy after a while and is how they lured me into paying for premium.
Though you prolly figured this out by now!

Your suspicions are valid, the dude has some serious anger issues to say the least. We’ll see about evidence….
Elowen is great! Poor Zeke, jumping in to defend her and having to face the music from both ends. Really drew the short end of the stick there.
Oh yeah, gah the screenshots! I’m still not quite used to them, being honest. I think having a WordPress subscription would definitely be the most convenient way to do things, unfortunately I am very broke😂
